There are perhaps two answers -

1 - Compatibility with Microsoft tools, they offer the type, and allow you to use it in the same way, as well as exhibiting the same behaviour. The error is from the MS expression evaluator itself, same as you'd see in their editor or at runtime.

2 - It doesn't make any sense to me for expressions, as it cannot be used, but see point 1 as to why it is there in this tool.

What is the purpose of having the value type of DBNull?

It is not even appearing in the Types folder, and any attempt to use it in an expression results in

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

The data type of variable "User::Test" is not supported in an expression.

Reading the variable "User::Test" failed with error code 0xC00470D0.

PS: User::Test is of type DBNULL

I didn't realize this tool existed outside of BIDS Helper. AWESOME! One question... why am I getting this in the editor?

Here is my expression:

"SEQ - Package Logic (Version " + (DT_STR, 3, 1252)@[System::VersionMajor] + "_" + (DT_STR, 3, 1252)@[System::VersionMinor] + " Build (" + (DT_STR, 3, 1252)@[System::VersionBuild] + ") Comments - " + @[System::VersionComments] + ")"

Results:

SEQ - Package Logic (Version 1_0 Build (79) Comments - First Iteration)

I just started using this to assign the Name Property of a Sequence Container that contains all of the business logic of a package.

To wrap this up…the problem I was having was related to the Display DPI settings for my monitor. It turns out that my new monitor defaulted to 120dpi, rendering the Value element as being hidden. Either resizing the window manually or resetting my dpi to 96 resolved the issue.

Hi Darren,

I tried these methods. I believe something is problematic with the interface and/or how it is interacting with my pc. When I try editing a variable (for example “User::StringVar”), the “Value:” text shows up, but there is no box to edit.

If I change the type to something like Int32, I get an editable box, but it is clear that something on the GUI is not displaying as intended.

Have you seen this before? Do you have any ideas as to how I could resolve the issue?

Sounds like you want to display the list of columns in the tree view of the editor. I would add a new constructor for the ExpressionEditorPublic class that accepts something that gives you column information, e.g. IDTSInputColumnCollection100. You would then amend the ExpressionEditorView.PopulateFunctionsTree method to interrogate the column information and add it to the tree. I’d suggest a new top level node alongside Variables. You would then be able to drag and drop column information from the tree view to the expression text box. The tree view node Tag property value is what is actually added to the expression text.

thnks for responding me Darren. sorry that i am not able to deliver my problem correctly. basically i am developing my own derived column transformation. for this i want to an expression editor. your given editor is very good. but i need a small change. i want to add columns like you see in the business intelligence project for derived column.

To reference a column in the expression would be a problem, because the expression evaluator (from Microsoft) doesn't appear to have any column context. Therefore a column name would not be transposed to the column value during evaluation. You would have write some code to pre-process the expression and replace the column name with a literal value.

I may have misunderstood the question as you say "store the expression against a table column" which I don't quite understand. Storing a property value against a column is standard practice, but I don't see how that relates to the editor. Storing a string in a column property is fine, and that string could be an expression, but to reference the column you have the issue I mention above.

respective sir, i am building my own expression builder and this code helps me alot. but still i have an issue. i am using also using columns and there is no way to handle the columns. basically i have to store the expression against a table column. please guide me how can i do it. thnks

reb01501, BIDS Helper already uses an older version of the editor control. It is used when you click the Edit Expression button available on the Variables window toolbar. The latest version needs a few tweaks to be integrated into BIDS Helper, I've done some base code and passed it along, but it needs to be integrated into the project by the team, and fit into their release schedule.
